Move the Nuclear Weapons Money Conference

The Move the Nuclear Weapons Money: Investing in a sustainable future, is an international conference on divestment and other actions by cities, universities, parliaments and religious institutions to reverse the nuclear arms race and protect the climate.

The conference will be held on April 12-13, the opening days of the 2019 Global Days of Action on Military Spending, a campaign launched by the International Peace Bureau with the aim to aim is reduce global military spending.

The Basel conference will bring legislators at federal, state/cantonal and city levels (parliamentarians, mayors and city councilors) to Basel to engage with security experts, financial managers and civil society representatives on key issues which are driving the regional and global nuclear arms race, and how to reverse these.  A principle focus of the conference will be on ending investments in nuclear weapons and fossil fuel industries and encouraging sustainable investment policies and practices.

The conference is part of the Move the Nuclear Weapons Money campaign, a global initiative to cut nuclear weapons budgets and investments, and to reinvest these to support climate protection, peace, economic development and sustainable development.

Conference speakers include: General (ret) Bernard Norlain, Vice-President of Initiatives pour le désarmement nucléaire and Former Air Defense Commander (France); Fabian Hamilton MP, UK Shadow Minister for Peace and Disarmament; Cllr Audrey Doig, Member of the Renfrewshire City Council and Vice Chair of Nuclear Free Local Authorities Scotland; Serge Stroobants, Director of European Operations for the Institute for Economics and Peace and the Global Peace Index; Quique Sánchez, Coordination team member for the Global Campaign on Military Spending; Rudolf Rechsteiner, President of the Ethos Foundation, Swiss Pension Fund Manager; Nishant Malapatti, Financial adviser for Blackrock USA; Margret Kiener Nellen MP, Head of Swiss delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly; Bärbel Höhn MP, Chair of the Global Renewables Congress; Maaike Beenes, Program officer humanitarian disarmament at PAX Netherlands and researcher for Don’t Bank on the Bomb; Daniel Rietiker, President of the Association of Swiss Lawyers for Nuclear Disarmament; Jürgen Grässlin, Spokesman of the campaign Crying out loud – Stop Weapons Exports! of the German Peace Society (DFG-VK) and more…

The Basel-Stadt Canton is an active participant in Mayors for Peace, a global network of over 7,700 member cities (including 21 in Switzerland and over 2000 in the rest of Europe) supporting the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world. The Basel Peace Office serves as the European office of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (PNND), a global cross-party network of legislators. The conference will build upon previous Basel events including a European Regional Meeting of Mayors for Peace and PNND held in January 2019 which produced the Basel Appeal for Disarmament and Sustainable Security, the 2019 Basel Peace Forum which focused on impact investment, and an international conference in Basel in September 2017 on Human Rights, Future Generations and Crimes in the Nuclear Age.
